Bishop to install new Honorary Canons at Leicester Cathedral

On September 15th the Bishop of Leicester will install three new Honorary Canons at Leicester Cathedral.

The honorary role is being given to Stephen Adshead, in recognition of his work with our Board of Education, and Revd Jonathan Dowman, in recognition of his work with Pioneers and fresh expressions of Church in this diocese.

Stephen is Chair of Leicester Diocesan Board of Education which supports almost 100 church schools and academies.

He lives in Loughborough and is married to Adele and they worship at St Mary in Charnwood, where Adele is vicar. They have two grown up children. Following a first career as project manager in the pharmaceutical industry, Stephen now is now able to make time for other roles with local churches, the diocese and in support of church schools. Away from working time, Stephen enjoys walking and cycling. Trips to the Lake District fells are a favourite. He has also enjoyed coast to coast and Scottish island bike tours in the last couple of years.

Stephen said: “Our 97 diocesan church schools are highly valued by their local communities and a wonderful way for the Church to reach out and build relationships both directly with the staff, pupils and students and indirectly to local families and friends.”

Stephen is therefore passionate in supporting our schools through the Board to offer the best possible education in Christian context and to encourage and support school and church collaborations.

He said: “I was surprised to be invited to be Canon but genuinely pleased to see my work and that of the Board recognised, and to have the opportunity to promote our church schools as a Canon.”

Jonathan, lives in Market Harborough with his wife Emma (who manages The Well in Kibworth) and their three children.

Jonathan said: “I have had the joy of serving in the Diocese of Leicester for five years as a Pioneer Development Worker. This has meant encouraging and journeying with a wide range of churches and leaders as they explore mission with those who would not usually connect with church in any way. Before that, I served in Birmingham and Ely Diocese in both fresh expressions and parish ministry. Leicester is my favourite though!”

In addition, Sara Burgess will also be installed as an Honorary Canon for the duration of her year as a Senior Warden.

All are welcome to attend the service which will be held at the Cathedral on 15th September at 3pm until about 4.30pm.
