Bishop’s Lent Appeal 2019 SoundCafe – a ‘safe creative space’

People who are vulnerable, socially isolated or who experience homelessness are to benefit from the Bishop of Leicester’s 2019 Lent Appeal.

This year, the Rt Revd Martyn Snow has chosen SoundCafe for the annual fundraising across the Church of England’s Diocese of Leicester, which includes more than 300 rural and urban churches.

SoundCafe Leicester is a registered charity which runs free weekly sessions at St Martins House in Leicester where guests can enjoy hospitality, friendship, support and a variety of creative activities from singing to composing poetry, and drawing and painting. It helps to promote feelings of well-being, confidence and self-esteem.

Roz, Chairperson for SoundCafe Leicester’s Trustees said: “Our guests are people with as much right to respect and dignity as anyone else. By offering a safe space they can experience and express their God-given creativity. And this leads to transformed lives; our guests say they feel welcomed and that they ‘belong’ and feel cared for by the volunteers. Some of our guests have made very positive choices and changes in their lives as a result.

“Donations will go towards our development plan so we that can offer broader services to our guests than just what we currently offer one day per week. Our ideas for the future include providing more information and signposting; extending the opportunities we offer for people to develop further in drama and the arts; and in further exploration of faith.”

Bishop of Leicester, the Rt Revd Martyn Snow, said: “I have been a patron of SoundCafe since my arrival in Leicestershire and so I have seen first-hand the wonderful spirit of friendship and encouragement which it fosters.”
