Canon Karen Rooms appointed to the new role of Women’s Ministry Enabler

Canon Karen Rooms, Canon Missioner at Leicester Cathedral and Transition Priest, Holy Spirit Parish has been appointed to the new role of Women’s Ministry Enabler for the Diocese. Twenty five years after the ordination of women to the priesthood there are 100 female clergy in the Diocese, just under a third of all clergy. Over half of both our Pioneer leaders and Lay Readers are female, and women are found in the most senior roles within the Diocese – Bishop, Archdeacon and Director of the Board of Education.

Karen, whose first responsibility in the role will be to organise a silver anniversary celebration service on Saturday 4th June at 4pm in the Cathedral recently observed that despite the progress made in recent years there remains
“… some way to go before the experiences and voices of women are fully integrated in the culture of the Church. Women are still experiencing varying degrees of prejudice and bias in our churches, where issues of gender are as real as they are in wider society. This role gives me the opportunity of forming a small task group to work with women across the diocese to rock the boat a little: to break the silences around female experiences; to develop practices to minimise discrimination on the grounds of gender, and to contribute positively to the formation and confidence of women in their ministry. I am also interested in focussing on the common kingdom tasks we share with those who hold a different view about women in the church.”

Karen added: ‘It is a privilege to have the opportunity to work with the women of this diocese who are offering faithful and inspirational ministry, many of them in challenging contexts. I know there is more we can do to encourage each other to lean in to our vocations, and look forward to enabling some creative conversations, and maybe even starting a book club. If you want to join in making positive changes for women in ministry at every level of the church’s life, I would love to hear from you.”
