Statement from the Bishop of Leicester on Swinford School

The Bishop of Leicester has today issued a statement regarding Swinford School. The Rt Revd Martyn Snow said:

“Small rural Church of England Primary Schools are facing unprecedented funding challenges but we are committed to keep our small rural schools like Swinford open in the heart of their local communities.

“On hearing the very strongly held views of community members, Leicester Diocesan Board of Education (DBE) and I have advised the Diocese of Leicester Academies Trust (DLAT) to continue to make every effort to listen to the views of the community in order to inform their decisions.

“The pain and anxiety expressed is extraordinary and should, in our view, be given due regard so that the community’s voice is captured and contributes to the decisions that the academy trust board are making. We believe that all decisions made will be in the best interests of children.

“We acknowledge the many successes of DLAT including improvements in schools and outcomes for children and we hope that all can work collaboratively to secure future successes. We admire their help for schools adapting to financial challenges in line with our Small Schools Strategy which support academy trusts. We encourage DLAT to engage with the community because we know that community support is integral to excellent church school education.

“The situation is very difficult for all the staff, community and local governors and the DBE has been working closely with local clergy to arrange pastoral support as needed. Please remember the school and DLAT in your prayers at this extraordinarily challenging time. We hold to our aspiration that this difficult situation can be resolved positively.”
