The diocese has learned of the death of Ian Imlay MBE. Mr Imlay was a much loved member of St Nicholas Church in the city centre and was the organist there for more than 60 years. He has also played the organ at various other churches around the diocese including St Mary Magdalene in Kilby, St Peter’s Church in Oadby and Leicester Cathedral. In 2017 he was awarded an MBE for services to music.
In June of this year, inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore, Mr Imlay challenged himself to play 84 hymns to celebrate his 84th birthday, raising more than a thousand pounds in sponsorship. This was shared between LOROS, Rainbows and AKT, a national charity that works with LGBT+ young people dealing with homelessness and debt.
