Leicester’s Filipino Chaplaincy, Bayanihan Leicestershire and Kanlungan Filipino Consortium are taking part in Everyday Action by providing Filipino food for staff of three Hospitals and five Care Homes in Leicestershire. On 10 August 2020, the group cooked and delivered rice and Chicken Adobo (chicken cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, onions) for 60 people in three care homes. The team are also providing food assistance to vulnerable individuals and families that have been hard hit by the pandemic.
Fr. Herbert Fadriquela, Chaplain to the Filipino Community explains why the group wanted to start this project: “We were encouraged by Bishop Martyn's message to support the workers in care homes and in the health sector. They are frontliners who have made a lot of sacrifices in addressing the COVID-19 here in Leicester. While many responded to the call of the UK government to clap every Thursday to support the work of the care workers, providing Filipino food is our way of saying ‘A Big Thank You’ to them. We are received warmly by the staff of the hospitals and care homes. Yesterday, before we left one of the care homes, a staff asked me when would they receive Filipino food again. This is very encouraging feedback from them.”
