Bishop Martyn Responds to Poverty Listening Exercise

The results have been published from the Bishops’ Children & Youth Council (BCYC) Autumn 2024 Listening Report on Poverty.

458 young voices from schools and church groups across the diocese contributed with their opinions, insights and questions.

The report raised some excellent questions about how we might raise awareness of poverty and how we can hear directly from those in poverty, which Bishop Martyn reflected on in his video response, as he highlighted the work of the many excellent charities engaged with the issue.

Bishop Martyn also commented on the relationship between faith and activism, saying, "We know that God cares about poverty, but the way God works in this world very often through us. It's like a partnership, just like a farmer planting a seed in the ground. The farmer plants the seed, but it's God who makes the seed grow. So we have to do some work ourselves to tackle poverty, and God enables the growth of that work."
