A Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving for HRH the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh will take place at Leicester Cathedral on Thursday 15 April at 5pm.
The Cathedral will re-open from 14 April for people to drop in for private prayer and reflection from Wednesday – Sunday, 11am- 3pm.
At Thursday's service there will be a representative invited congregation from across our city and county, led by Mr Mike Kapur OBE, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire alongside our civic and public leaders.
The service will be hosted by the Dean of Leicester and the Bishop of Leicester will preach. Music will be provided by members of the Cathedral Choir.
The public are invited to join online as the service is livestreamed on the Leicester Cathedral Facebook page from 5pm – anyone who is online can watch that even if they do not have their own Facebook account. It will then also be made available as a recording on the Leicester Cathedral Youtube Channel from later that evening (after 8.30pm) and will remain available thereafter.
Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Mike Kapur said: “This Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving for HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will allow us to come together and reflect upon the dedicated public service that His Royal Highness carried out for so many years. I hope that the people of Leicester and Leicestershire will join us virtually as we pay tribute to the duty, loyalty and service of His Royal Highness before his funeral on Saturday.”
Bishop of Leicester, the Rt Revd Martyn Snow said: “It's important that we remember the Duke of Edinburgh's connections with Leicester and Leicestershire and give thanks for his life. In particular, we will be praying for the Royal Family in their grief and we hope people will join us online.”
Dean of Leicester, the Very Revd David Monteith said: "His Royal Highness honoured us with his presence in the Cathedral and now we honour him. Each life changes us and so too with each death we are reshaped. Reflection, prayers and thanksgiving for Her Majesty and her family will help us all to respond to this sad and significant loss in our nation.”
