Churches Across the Diocese Encouraged to Mark Safeguarding Sunday

Churches across the diocese are being encouraged to mark Safeguarding Sunday on 17 November 2024.

Safeguarding Sunday is an annual awareness-raising campaign spearheaded by the safeguarding charity thirtyone:eight. It’s an opportunity for congregations to use their regular Sunday service to listen and talk about how spaces can be created that are safer for everyone, and to celebrate all the good work that is being done by so many behind the scenes.

It’s also a chance for our churches, schools and worshipping communities to show how they take their safeguarding responsibilities seriously, and to explore together what safe spaces look like.

The theme and focus for this year is ‘Let’s talk about it.’ You can find all the Safeguarding Sunday resources including films and animations, prayers, preaching notes, children's activity sheets, hymns, songs and a safeguarding pledge, and register to take part here.

Bishop Joanne Grenfell, the Church of England’s lead safeguarding bishop, says: “Protecting vulnerable people is at the heart of the Christian message.
“Safeguarding Sunday is about every person in the church knowing why we do what we do and knowing what part they can contribute to that.
“It is a chance to recognise the role of the parish as the front line of safeguarding and for parishes to show their communities the support they can offer to those who attend church, and those who don’t.”

Rachael Spiers, Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser, says: “The Diocese of Leicester Safeguarding Team are incredibly grateful for the safeguarding work that is undertaken in church settings, particularly by the dedicated Safeguarding Coordinators in our diocese. Safeguarding Sunday is the ideal opportunity to recognise and give thanks for this valuable work.

“This year, church settings have been busy getting to grips with the National Safeguarding Standards Framework. If you volunteer or have a role in church, a great way to show your support is by ensuring your safeguarding training is up to date.”

Our bishops, Bishop Martyn and Bishop Saju, have made a video talking about the importance of safeguarding and recognising the tireless work and vital ministry of those in our diocese who are committed to creating a safe, open and welcoming environment for all.

They say: “In the heart of our churches, schools and worshipping communities lies a profound responsibility - the duty of care for everyone.
“...This is core to our mission and our life together as a church. So, PCC members, Safeguarding Coordinators, indeed, every person within our churches has a responsibility for safeguarding because every person is created in the image of God and precious to God, so we all have a role to play.”
