Giving Thanks For Leicester Longwool Sheep

Over the summer, the county played host to a global conference for breeders of Leicester Longwool Sheep.

The occasion was the 300th anniversary of the birth of Robert Bakewell of Dishley in Loughborough - the most significant farm animal breeder of all time.

The Revd Paul Towns, himself a Longwool breeder, held a service of celebration in the ruins of All Saints Church, Dishley which is located within Bakewell's original farm yard.

During refurbishment of the Cathedral a Grotesque was commissioned of a Leicester Longwool to celebrate the area's heritage of sheep breeding.
A few of these rare Longwool Sheep were present at the Cathedral dedication service which took place on Saturday (20 September).

Here, Revd Paul is pictured winning the supreme Champion Cup, with his ewe lamb Darriet Jenny, at the Native Breed Show & Sale which took place earlier this month at Melton Market.
