Half Term Fun with Leicester Cathedral

An amazing array of strange creatures were spotted in Leicester Cathedral during February half-term last week, as families came to visit, be creative and make their own grotesque.

The hands-on experience not only sparked children's imaginations but also provided a fun and educational way to learn about the Cathedral’s history and architecture.

The Cathedral has its own remarkable collection of grotesques, installed as part of the Leicester Cathedral Revealed project (read more), and the opportunity for families to try creating their own unique clay creations proved popular with more than 250 participants joining in over two sessions.

Grotesque making was just one of several creative activities run by the Leicester Cathedral team during the week.

Stained-glass window making at Belgrave Library was another highlight, giving around 40 children the opportunity to explore their artistic talents while creating beautiful, colourful designs; whilst more than 150 visitors to the Haymarket Shopping Centre participated in ‘Richard III Crafts’ making “Crowns fit for Kings and Queens”.

These events were offered free of charge, and designed to be accessible for all, as part of the work at the Cathedral supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Encouraged by the week, Alex Blakemore, Leicester Cathedral’s Learning Officer, said: “The half-term activities run by Leicester Cathedral were a resounding success and a wonderful way for families to spend quality time together, fostering a love for history and art in a fun and interactive environment, drawing in families from all over to participate in the engaging and creative events.”

Part of the Cathedral’s vision is to foster ‘play’ and Alex is looking forward to offering many more exciting opportunities for visitors in the coming months.

Later this year, the Cathedral will open its Heritage & Learning Centre and will host ‘Events Under Mars’ from 16 May to 8 June, featuring an incredible seven-meter sculpture of the red planet by artist Luke Jerome. Visit the cathedral website for full details of the Mars installation and the wide range of accompanying events for all ages.
