Knitting to Remember

Like many of the churches around the diocese St Thomas a Becket, Skeffington, marked Remembrance Sunday with a single church bell toll marking the two minutes silence. Residents stood on the front porches and driveways to remember. But the church looked different – they had had a surprise ‘yarn bomb’ decorating the outside of the church in knitted poppies.

Julie Lockyer gathered a group of four knitters ‘the Skeffington Yarn Bombers’ including her some neighbours, who were self-isolating, and daughter to craft poppies. Julie explains ‘We knew the services would be limited and we though the poppies would bring some cheer and positivity.’ The group didn’t tell anyone in the village about the project, other than getting permission from the church. So when darkness fell Julie and her daughter went over to the church and sewed the poppies in place with head touches to guide the way. The whole village have enjoyed the display and the local WhatsApp group has been pinging with comments of how lovely it is. The group are hoping to expand and create the display again for next year.
