Earlier in August, the Church of the Martyrs in Leicester gathered 20 young adults and university students for a sizzling BBQ and conversation with Bishop Saju.
The group represented a diversity of cultural backgrounds who came together not only to share food but also to share fellowship.
In a relaxed setting, Bishop Saju spoke an inspiring message about how to “level up” faith and stay focused amid life’s challenges.
He encouraged and reminded the young people to remain steadfast while drawing strength from God’s word and community.
The Bishop also took time to hear each person’s story and acknowledge their experiences - his words of encouragement offering care and understanding. He concluded with a heartfelt prayer, uplifting their hopes and their journeys ahead.
Reflecting on the gathering, Bishop Saju said: “It was a joy to be with the young adults at Martyrs’ BBQ. I met vibrant folks from Ghana, Iran, India, the UK, and Sri Lanka - each carrying stories of hope and hardship.
"Their hunger for God was unmistakable. In their questions and laughter, I saw a deep desire to follow Jesus and live out their faith in the everyday grind of studies, jobs, and struggles with immigration.
"As Intercultural Worshipping Community Pioneers and Enablers, Sangeetha, Shobha and Michael serve and lead with grace and grit. I left with a strong sense that God is moving - in the storms and the shaloms.”
A few of the young adults shared their thoughts about the get together, expressing their gratitude and grace at being able to spend time with one another, and Bishop Saju.
Anil said: “I really enjoyed the Bishop’s BBQ — it had such a warm and friendly vibe. The food, music, and conversations made it easy to connect with people, and I left feeling more a part of the community.”
Sam added: “Tasty food, which leveled up my tummy, and more than that, God's word through Bishop Saju lifted up the soul and makes me think about leveling up in my faith journey; a memorable day which I can't forget. Thanks to God and to everyone for planning all this.”
Preethi said: “Actually coming to the BBQ was my best decision. I had a great time there, I met so many nice people from different backgrounds, and I learnt so much about them - and I enjoyed the food. I hope I can join more in the future.”
The young adults left the ocassion with a sense of joy, fulfilment and an encouragement for their faith journeys ahead. More than a meal, the BBQ was a moment of connection, laughter and opportunity to grow in Christ.
