May God’s Kingdom Come in Leicester and Leicestershire
Our Diocesan Strategy was approved by Diocesan Synod on 3 September 2024. It is a discernment of what God is saying and doing in Leicester and Leicestershire and how we should respond in the coming years.
The Bishop of Leicester, the Rt Revd Martyn Snow, describes the strategy as “a living document in a rapidly changing world” and so it will change and evolve over time, and will be used to guide our decision making and allocation of resources.
A simple ‘Strategy on a Page’ document has been created, together with an outline of the 3 Key Questions for churches and ministers, and 5 Strategic Priorities for our bishops and diocesan support.
These are a summary of a much longer strategy document which went to Diocesan Synod earlier this month and was agreed by a large majority.
The 3 Key Questions on discipleship remain central, and we hope that our churches will continue to use these to shape their own mission and ministry locally.
The 5 Strategic Priorities are primarily for diocesan leaders, as we make decisions about resource allocation, and include our specific aims for 2030.
Our Diocesan Strategy aims to tackle the main challenges related to mission, people, and finances.
We have made plans in six foundational areas - Vocations and Leadership, Finance, Church Buildings, Safeguarding, Minster Communities, and Diocesan Support and Governance - which will be essential in creating the right environment for churches and communities to flourish.
Claire Bampton, Diocesan Programme Manager, said: “This strategy is an exciting next step for the diocese as we seek to see the Kingdom of God continue to grow throughout all our churches, schools, chaplaincies and local communities.
“Our five strategic priorities reflect the ways in which we are seeking to resource churches across the diocese as we continue to ask our three key questions and seek God’s guidance in the growth of numbers and depth of discipleship and loving service of our communities.
“Our strategy also aims to be the starting point for how we address some of the biggest challenges facing us as a diocese, and how we respond to changes in society and across our local communities.
“In particular, the opportunities to focus on our mission and ministry with children and young people will not only impact the church of the future but will significantly enrich our current life and witness.”
