The Reverend Fran Grasham was recently licensed as Resident Chaplain of Launde Abbey by Bishop Saju during midday prayer in the Chapel.
Fran, and her husband Steve, were formally welcomed into the Abbey’s praying and staff & volunteer communities, in a service that saw friends and colleagues journey from Hinckley, Sunderland and as far as Southern Ireland to show their support.
As Resident Chaplain, Fran has joined Launde’s permanent praying community and is a part-time member of the ministry team.
“The licensing service was lovely,” says Fran. “I really appreciate what Alison put together, the decoration of the altar with objects relevant to the post, and flowers done by Jean, our lead housekeeper. And Bishop Saju was friendly and encouraging and so very tall!”
Settling into the diocese, her new role, and their new home in the Abbey, Fran says she and Steve have been made to feel ‘so welcome’.
“The role is exciting and a little overwhelming at the moment,” she explains. “As someone who enjoys personal retreats and quiet time for reflection, the job was very attractive, and I enjoy sharing the value of these things with others. I also love to be creative and hope to have opportunities to use this, once I've settled in. There is a lot to learn at this stage, as it is very different to being in a parish, but both Steve and I feel we have come to the right place.”
Fran is bursting with ideas for the role and the wider needs of the Abbey. “My first degree was in music, and I would love to explore how music can be a part of what we offer, without losing the quiet, contemplative character of the Abbey,” she says.
“Both Steve and I also have a lot of experience working with children and young people and would like to explore the possibilities here.
“I am keeping a journal of ideas, to reflect on over time and see which are suitable, and which need putting to one side for now!”
Talking about her new colleague, The Revd Alison Myers, Warden of Launde Abbey, said: “It is a joy to be able to welcome Fran and her husband, Steve, as the newest members of the community that lives, works and prays at Launde Abbey.
“Her skills and experience will add a further dimension to our resident ministry team as together we serve those who serve others across the diocese and beyond.”
