Update on Leicester Cathedral Revealed

Work is progressing on the final stages of building work for Leicester Cathedral’s restoration project, Leicester Cathedral Revealed.

Following the removal of scaffolding, the new Heritage & Learning Centre can now be seen, including the external stonework façade, 'veil' of moulded glazed terracotta fins, and copper roof parapet.

The Cathedral became the backdrop for a colourful digital art projection last week as part of the city’s Light Up Leicester festival.

Created by award-winning local artists MBD, and entitled Cathedral, Culture and Crown, the Cathedral was draped in a dazzling mix of projection, animation, immersive audio and a bespoke soundtrack, transforming the iconic building into a moving visual feast that celebrated the city's rich history and communities.

The site is now sealed off again with fencing to allow for the reinstatement of Cathedral Gardens, including repair work, installation of new turf, and the removal of temporary ground works done to make the site safe during the festival.

It is anticipated that Cathedral Gardens and the Heritage & Learning Centre will be fully open by late May / early June 2025.

The project has been made possible with funding by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, along with many other generous funders and donors.

Richard Norman, Chief Operating Officer at Leicester Cathedral, said: “We can’t wait to welcome the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and beyond back to a fully re-opened Cathedral site.
“There has been much hard work with plenty of challenges along the way, but since we reopened the main building back in November 2023, we’ve seen an amazing response to the work that Leicester Cathedral has been doing to restore the building, renew our sacred spaces, and reaffirm the Cathedral's place at the centre of City and County.”
