Are you interested in contributing to racial justice in our diocese?

The Diocese of Leicester is forming the Racial Equity Unit (REU), a sub-committee of DFEMA, to provide guidance and support to our governing bodies’ ongoing work to improve racial equity in the diocese’s mission and ministry.

The REU will aim to act as a voice for ethnically minoritized and marginalised groups through ongoing engagement with UKME communities across the Diocese of Leicester as well as the various boards and committees.

It will work to explore historic and contemporary, systemic and interpersonal racial discrimination, inequity and oppression that UKME Anglicans face within the life and structures of the Diocese of Leicester and beyond.

This is also an excellent opportunity to work with Jessie Tang, our new Director of Intercultural Ministry, who will be leading on our Racial Equity Strategy as we work on an action plan.

If you think this might be your calling, please email Bishop Saju by 4th August at the latest.

Details of the terms or reference for the Racial Equity Unit can be found by clicking here.

Canon Chrispal Anand, Chair of DFEMA, said:

“Systematic racial injustice continues in some form in our lives and as Christians to be a true witness for Christ we need to take responsibility to eradicate racism in our churches. I am delighted that the Diocese of Leicester is taking steps to embed cultural change and the work of Racial Equity Unit will play a pivotal role to set up processes to enable eliminating the racial injustice within its structures.”

Bishop Saju said:

"I long for a church with a greater sense of belonging and fuller participation of all people, particularly those of global majority heritage, in the life and structures of Leicester Diocese. As we live into our commitment to racial equity as an ongoing and central part of our ministry and mission, the Racial Equity Unit will provide a prominent voice for ethnically minoritized and marginalised groups."
